Tell your photographers to GET CLOSER!—

Dear Yearbookers,
One of the best parts of YearTech Online is that from my office computer I can go and look at the progress of yearbooks that are being created online by those schools using the program. They are looking GREAT! And this tip is for everyone. I just thought of it while reviewing those pages.

But one think I did notice that you need to work on (this pretty much goes for everybody) is that you need to tell your photographers to get a lot closer.

I am seeing way too many photos taken from across a classroom or a gymnasium with people the size of ants. Please stress to your photographers that the best pictures have lots of faces and very little extraneous background. Years from now no one will care how shiny the gym floor was but they will care about the look of determination on the faces of your basketball players.

Today, I MUST MUST MUST have Zach D. confirm a final number of Elementary Books.

Next Week

Friday ACT:  Finish the work on your spreads.  The more info you can get on, the better.

Starting Next Week:

Monday:  Advertising Lesson

Tuesday- Friday: Divide and Conquer

We will be working on sports pages, making content mods, Academic Pages, and a variety of other projects that will go directly into the book.

Tuesday, January 17, 2012

Layout BEGINS

Yesterday, you and a partner got a new spread idea that will go into the yearbook.

Open a practice page.  Name it your topic.  Work together to block out where your main photo will go.  Include a footer for a questionnaire.   Block in where any content mods or info graphs will go.  Add text where the blurb and captions fit.

Save this at the end of class.

TGIF

Today we will do three things.

1-  I will demo how to make an infographic.

2-  You will have 30 minutes of work time on your layout spreads.

3-  You will get a homework sheet to complete outside of class.  It will be due on MONDAY at the start of class.

Thursday, Jan 5th

ACT 1:  We will start with a quick worksheet.  It will review and reinforce the vocabulary and layout ideas that we are working with in class.

Then, once finished, work on your Practice Spread.  Add at least 7 photos with captions.  Leave space for an infograph.  I will talk about them tomorrow.

END OF CLASS:  Homework PROJECT!

Layout and Design Projects

ACT 1:  Design 1 Worksheet.  Use a textbook.  Work in a group of two.  Complete the worksheet then turn it in to Mr. Bollman.

SUSTAINED PROJECT:   PRACTICE PAGE PROJECT
Layout and Design Projects
You will design a full spread on a topic of your choosing from the following categories:
     A band or musical group
A pro or college sports team or athlete
     A  video game

You will build your page in the ways taught in class.  Use a dominant photo.  Headline and Secondary Headline and fill the page with other photos.  You will write an opening blurb, captions and create an info-graphic of real information to make a finished spread that we will print and hang on a bulletin board.

You may use photos from the internet and place them into the PRACTICE FOLDER.

DUE on WEDNESDAY.

By the end of class TODAY:  Have topic chosen.  Create PRACTICE PAGE.  FIND and UPLOAD a dominant photo.  Place it on the page.  Create a headline and secondary headline.  Save the project.
