Goal Planning, Self-Reflection

Read the handout "Speaking from Experience".

Read the words of wisdom from Yearbook Advisers from across the country.  Reflect on this class and the yearbook we are working on.

1) Which of these GOALS could we improve on as a class?

2) Which one could you PERSONALLY work on?

3) What do you want to learn more about next quarter?

ASN:  Write an essay answering all of these question.  Print it out and hand it in by the end of class.

Emailing a Coach or Teacher

Sometimes you need to leave a note with a coach or teacher or send them an email to get into about a sport, event or activity.  Here is a quick tip to help this go smoother.

The RIGHT way to ask for help (especially from a coach or teacher)

Hi Coach Jokowski,

My name is Bob Boberson, and I'm putting together the yearbook pages for
boys' soccer. If you don't mind, I'm hoping you can answer a few questions
for me so I can write the story and captions. I'll need this information
no later than Friday.

1. Which game during the regular season was the most memorable, and why?

2. What challenges did the team face this season?

3. Which players stood out as leaders on the team?

4. What goals did the team have going into the season, and how well did
the players meet them?

Thanks for your help.

Bob

The WRONG way to ask for help (especially from a coach or teacher)

Cartoon Effect

Creating a cool cartoon effect from a photograph is fun and easy.  But sometimes you have to play around with a variety of FILTERS and EFFECTS to get it exactly the way you want it.  The following is a GUIDE, not a step-by-step tutorial.  Each one will require some creativity.

Try these effects to begin with to make the image look drawn and hand painted.

FILTER> ARTISTIC> CUT-OUT EFFECT

IMAGE>ADJUSTMENTS>POSTERIZE

Some times you need to paint color back ontop of the image.

1- create new layer.

2- set Layer Type to COLOR BURN or MULTIPLY.

3- with the BRUSH TOOL (B), paint in the color you want.

Stamp Benday Dots on the image can give that comic boook feel.

1- Open the benday dot pattern you want.

2- EDIT>DEFINE BRUSH PRESET

3- Select your new brush head and stamp the benday dots you want.

SAVE works in progress as PSD (PHOTOSHOP FORMAT).  Always get a CARTOON EFFECT approved by Mr. Bollman before you finish.

A Picture Is Worth...

Northwestern knocks off No. 9 Nebraska
Notice how MSNBC chose to portray Northwestern's stunning upset over Nebraska.  Instead of showing a batched play on the field, or hot-headed Husker coach Bo Pelini blowing his top, the photographer turned the camera towards the crowd.
Here we see two fans' total disbelief at what they see before them.  One appears sick to his stomach.  The other, dressed in a ridiculous corn costume, folds his arms in exasperation.
As winter sports approach, think about how you can catch the story.

Look at the photo, read enough of the article to understand the context, then right your own TITLE and CAPTION to the photo.  Ad your caption as a COMMENT to this post.

No Excuses

Deadlines are so VERY important.  In a professional publication setting, their are NO EXCUSES for missing deadlines.

The ancient philosopher Yoda expressed it best.

So, according to Yoda, here are your options.

Let's all dial in, get focused and hit our deadline.  Stories done, shared and rewritten by END of class on Monday.

Nose to the Grind Stone

Staff:
We need to kick it up a notch to knock out some yearbook items.

We will have some hard deadlines the next week.  Make sure you focus and get them done.  If you have any questions or need help, please come to me, Kaylee or DeLaney.  We are here to help you.

Big Assignments- Last week we discussed STORY TOPICS and we were supposed to have selected topics, someone to interview, and written questions in our reporters notebooks.

With all of the assemblies, early outs, field trips and PT days, I know that we are all sort of scattered on these.

We will focus on these the next four days and we WILL READ FINISHED STORIES ON MONDAY, Nov 7th.

If you still don't have a story, clear one by me ASAP!

Possible Topics-
Tornado This Summer
County Fair Stories - Dylan's Sister
Fall Sports (Volleyball's big run)
Back To School *difference between 6th and 7th grader, or big 7th grade class)
Halloween- A lot of choices here
Coaches For Cancer- What we are doing and why

Step 1- Come up with a topic.  Get it approved.

Step 2- Write questions (both open and closed ended) in your reporters notebook.

Step 3- Interview (in person) the person.  This will probably happen on your own time, before or after school, during homeroom, study hall, etc.

Step 4- Use your STORY WRITING HAND OUT to help guide your through the story writing process.

Step 5- Share your document with DeLaney so she can proof it.  FRIDAY IS A GOOD DAY TO HAVE THIS DONE BY SO SHE CAN EDIT THEM FOR YOU.

GO GET 'EM TEAM!

CAPTIONS 101

1. Start with one sentence in PRESENT TENSE that tells the reader what is going on.

BEWARE OF THE PARTICIPLE PHRASE FRAGMENT!!!

wrong-   Mr. Malone sitting at his desk.

correct-  Mr. Malone sits at his desk.

2. Next add a sentence or two that ADD CONTEXT.  THEY MUST BE IN PAST TENSE.
The reason for this is that the action in the photo has already become a thing of the past once your readers get their yearbook. You write about that action in the proper tense to maintain consistency.

3. Every caption should do a few key things:
- Describe the action taking place in the photo.
- Identify every person in the photo by name and grade, up to 5 people.
 examples:

Kaylee Burgett (12) and DeLaney DeJong (12)....  or Senior girls Kaylee Burgett (12) and DeLaney DeJong..

-Go beyond the photo by providing additional details about the event or program the photo highlights.

4.  Use quotes whenever possible to add a personal element, it gets the reader into the story.
DO NOT MAKE UP YOUR QUOTES!  Go ask the students in the photos what they were doing or feeling when the photo was taken. Ask what happened next.

Example:
BEING MALONE-LIKE
Students Get Cultured On Another Culture
Mr. Malone sits at his desk during Geography class and quizzes the students on Central America.  Malone, a favorite teacher of many students, brought in a maraca, a sombrero, and a blanket from his trip to Panama.  "I like to let the kids touch a little bit of a foreign country," Malone says.  "I'm just one awesome guy.  That's why I got the Golden Apple."

Yearbook Issues In The News

Many schools require students to take a FORMAL yearbook photo their senior year.   They require tuxedos and draped dresses.   One student challenged this rule and it went all the way to U.S. District Court.

http://www.firstamendmentcenter.org/teen-can-sue-after-tuxedo-picture-blocked-from-yearbook

READ THIS ARTICLE.

Discuss it with a neighbor.

Then post a comment to this post stating your opinion. What sort of dress codes are ok for senior photos?  What do you think of this student's complaint?  Write at least four sentences.  End with a conclusion statement.

How To Make A Custom Brush

So you want to make a ben-day dot brush to stamp on your graphic images.  Here is the easy step-by-step instructions to make it happen.

Step 1- Open Google Docs.  In the COMICBOOK shared folder there are image files.  Find the one you want to use as a brush head and save it to your desktop.

Step 2- Open it in PHOTOSHOP

Step 3- Edit>Define Brush Preset.  This will open a box that will create your own custom brush head.  Name it and save it.  Now it is saved FOREVER in your brush head pallet.  It is usually found at the bottom.

Step 4- Open the image you want to apply ben-day dots on.

Step 5- Magic Wand (W) the area you want to stamp on.

Step 6- Select the Paint Brush (B) tool.  In the Brush Head Pallet scroll to the bottom and find your new brush.  Make sure the size is correct and you have selected the color you want to stamp.

Step 7-  Now its stamping time!  Remember to save final images at TIFFS if you have a transparent background.

Now that you know the trick, you can make a brush head that looks like just about ANYTHING!
HAPPY STAMPING!

Thursday, Oct 6th

ACTIVITY 1-   Finish reading stories

ACTIVITY 2-  SLIDESHOW ON GOOD REPORTING

ACTIVITY 3- READ the project below on MAPS AND FLAGS

ACTIVITY 4- Start work on big individual projects.

Maps and flags in your YEARBOOK LAYOUTS

At least two or three a year, someone will want to add a flag or map to their yearbook layout.  They ask, “Where is a good place to get maps or flags of foreign countries for our exchange student page or on a current events page?”  DO NOT just search Google and hope you can find something. Images you find on the web have two problems. A lack of resolution (most are only 72DPI and we need 300DPI to print) and you don’t own them. They belong to someone else. So you have to buy them (if they are for sale).

Now there is an amazing site called the World Factbook with maps and flags that the site states right  at the top of the copyright page, “The Factbook is in Public Domain.” Which means that ANYONE can use any of the maps, the flags or even the photos of foreign countries on the site...for free. And the are all high resolution and easily downloadable.

So, who creates this amazing site and lets you download all this for free? The Central Intelligence Agency. That’s right, the CIA. You know the bad guys in the Jason Borne movies?  Well when they aren't programming rogue assassins or covering up conspiracy theories, it seams they are scanning high quality images for yearbooks to use.

Don’t believe me? Check out https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/index.html. What an amazing resource.

Story Writing with Quotes

Autobiography

Lead:

To most the hayfields and silos of southeastern Iowa looked quite mundane but to Brant Bollman it was a land of imagination- where a young boy could dream of dragons and adventure- when anything was possible and dreams were as big as drive-in movie screens.

Transition:

Bollman grew up on a 200-acre farm of rolling hills and alfalfa fields.  His father raised

Human Context:

“I read a lot of fantasy books back in those days- Tolkien and Piers Anthony mainly, but my biggest fantasy came after the story was finished. I used to go out into the hayfields, climb atop a big round bale of hay and daydream my own tales in the orange glow of the Iowa sun.”

Transition:

Bollman attended the University of Iowa and received a BFA in Fine Arts.  He studied abstract painting, sculpture and worked on some pioneering digital imaging projects using the new media of the 1990’s.

Quote:

“I created my imaginary world, not in a hayfield but in my studio.  My dreams took shape with bright liquid colors, cartoon creatures and never ending stories.”

Today Bollman teaches students at a school not far from the hayfields where he once daydreamed.  At North Mahasha Community Schools he teaches K-12, painting, drawing and graphic design.

“My hope is to keep these kids dreaming, to expand their minds and teach them that the imagination is the greatest adventure of all.”
